On July 9th in the 112th year (2023), our center held the second training course for migrant caregivers under the guidance of the Taipei City Labor Force Reconstruction and Utilization Office. The course was conducted with teaching and guidance by Teacher Yang Chen Bimei. A total of 32 migrant worker participated, and the activities were divided into two parts: the first half focused on caring for individuals with mental and intellectual disabilities, while the second half covered practical skills related to nasogastric tubes and urinary catheters. Many of the participating students came from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Our center provided simultaneous two-way translation of the course content to ensure that language barriers did not hinder the absorption of knowledge by the migrant workers.

Firstly, the instructor introduced the causes of various types of mental and intellectual disabilities and the impact of their symptoms. The goal was to help migrant workers develop empathy for the inconveniences experienced by individuals with disabilities in their daily lives. This would enable them to quickly understand and respond to unexpected situations while providing care. During the class, the instructor asked the migrant workers to discuss the attitudes they should adopt when caring for individuals with mental and intellectual disabilities. Many of the workers had experience in caring for individuals with disabilities and shared the common values of tolerance, patience, and love.

One worker shared her experience of caring for her grandmother, who had dementia and a mental disorder. Her grandmother often claimed to have plans to meet friends and go for walks in the evening. She patiently accompanied her grandmother, engaged in conversations until she fell asleep peacefully. She also mentioned that her employer rarely interacted with her grandmother, so she would occasionally hug and praise her, fulfilling her need for love and companionship.

The techniques and knowledge related to the use of nasogastric tubes and urinary catheters were demonstrated by the teacher, and the migrant worker students gathered around attentively to observe. This helped them develop professional caregiving skills, enabling them to handle equipment with ease and pay closer attention to the physiological needs of those under their care. It also improved communication with healthcare professionals.

Throughout the course, the migrant workers were deeply engaged and responded enthusiastically. Through this learning experience, the quality of their work and the quality of life of those they care for were enhanced. They could also share the skills they learned today with their employers and work together for progress.
